A Popular, but Ineffective Question

 

Often, in online discussions of card reading. it's suggested that people "reframe" (IOW change) their question to "what do I need to know about _______?"

It's better to ask clear, specific questions:
"Will I get this job?"
"Is X going to ask me out?"
"Where is my jade pendant?"
"Does my dog get separation anxiety when I'm not home?"
Etc.

And also remember that the cards will answer what you ask literally. If I order makeup from Sephora and I want to know if I'll get it before the end of the week, I should ask that. Not "What do I need to know about the makeup I ordered from Sephora?" There's a big difference in a want and a need. I don't need to know whether I'll get the makeup by the end of the week. I won't waste away and die without this information. Even in a looser sense of the word "need", like a job that requires employees to look well put together and wear a little makeup, every makeup-wearing person on the planet who is not unhoused already has a stash of it. So I don't need to know anything, and the cards will reflect that.

But I still won't know if the package will show up on time.

The cards are often quite literal. Words should be chosen carefully. 😉

People who ask you to reframe your question into something nebulous and non-specific are not experienced readers. They might be dilettantes parroting something they saw at a random website, or forum mods trying to enforce some ill-informed rule. But never good, experienced readers.

Just ask what you WANT to know. Not what you "need" to know, and certainly not what "the universe" wants you to know! Do you honestly think the vast, infinite universe concerns itself with our mail?

A Small Sicilian Tarot Reading

 

This is the Tarocco Siciliano. I've been studying the Bolognese thanks to Moderately Quick Silver's wonderful blog and Germana Tartari's Tarocchino Bolognese. The book is in Italian, but we have Google Lens these days. No more typing text into online translators!

These Italian decks are refreshing. Straight-up cartomancy with no meaningless navel gazing! No new age bullshit! Nothing that allegedly smells like Gwyneth Paltrow's vagina!

So of course I had to get a Sicilian deck, too. I only have one resource for it so far, Arianna Montalto's Tarocco Siciliano. But she gives you the card meanings, plus some useful tidbits like "When you are in conflict or competition with someone, look for the 5 of Batons. The card behind it will reveal the solution to the problem."

The deck is structured differently than the Tarots people are used to. For more information on that, I'll refer you to wikipedia.

But anyway:

After that shameful fiasco Yam Tits pulled on President Zelenskyy (who is everything a President ought to be), I just want him OUT. I always wanted him out, always voted against him to begin with, but this goes beyond that. He can take Space Karen and Couchfucker with him.

I want to say here that I can't detach from this issue and feel neutral about it. But I still get a clear reading because the cards have clear meanings. There is no ambiguity.

Sending migrants to Gitmo is a repulsive display of bigotry. Looting the benefits that we paid into is a major crime. But this felt like the final straw. I don't want my country to be aligned with Russia and Dobby the Dacha Elf. This shit is not only revolting and stupid, it's extremely dangerous. Not just here, Europe too.

I asked if he could be out in the next six months. I used a simple PPF spread from the Montalto book: Past, recent past, present, near future, future. 8 of Coins is debilitating, but it's flanked by Love and Constancy, showing that so far he's had a way out. He surrounds himself with loyal toadies. The 9 of Swords is a card of obstacles, so that's something to look forward to. In some ways, he's painted himself into a corner. And the last card is Justice. I like Justice. From Montalto via google lens:

1. A Man of Law (KH) - He looks pompous and condescending, and possibly quite superficial. He’d be someone who hangs out at the Fancy Men’s club and who makes fun of people behind their backs. 

2. A Chamberlain (JH) - Prettyboy, but not very clever. Likes to woo women and considers himself the most eligible bachelor in town. Secretly fantasize about being spanked by the butchers wife.  

 

3. A Widower (KS) - Sarcastic, dark sense of humor. Detached and not particularly caring. I don’t think he liked people to begin with.  

 

 

4. A Man with Brown Hair (KC) - Married but a bad husband. Secret pervert. Drinks too much, gambles and has a thing for prostitutes. His hand is reaching for his pocket where he keeps all his small change that he tips the street women with.  

 

 

5. A Fair Lady (QH) - Young woman who has lived with her elderly mother a very long time, and now wants to be married off quickly, because she fears that she might have accidentally popped her ‘flower’ while riding too intensely on the trip to the country fair last week. Pretty and naive. 

 

 

6. Hope (QD) - Being stuck in one’s way. The attitude that ‘all you need is hope’, and that no further effort is needed.  

 

 

7. Widow (QS) - I sort of like her. But she looks like she’s inconvenienced by her widowhood. That overly puffy dress will surely make her life more difficult and she might be resentful because of it. I think she can be mean, but she has more layers to her, deep underneath that puffy dress…  

 

 8. A Dark Lady (QC) - Fancy and clever woman. Learned. A little bit bitchy but fun to have as a friend.

 

 

9. A Fair Haired Young Man (JH) - His family expects a lot out of him and he does not want to let anyone down. He’s a bit dry and held back, not the most passionate lover but a decent person.  

 

10. A Soldier (JD) - He looks like a patient and resourceful individual. He has a clear plan and likes to consider all aspects. His situation is ongoing, no changes in the near future.

 

 

11. A Man From the Country (JS) - He looks like the younger brother of the family; the one who works hard but who also writes sweet poetry on his lunch breaks. He desires a good wife and ten kids.  

 

12. A Dark Haired Young Man (JC) - Very feminine looking man. (Drag?) Fashionable. Doesn’t like to get his hands dirty and wouldn’t know how to build a chair or clear the gutters. 

 13. The House (AH) - The two doves look like they’re getting more action than that poor waving woman. But nonetheless, a very nice home.  

 

 

14. The Business Letter (AD) - An important message or news to come shortly.  

 

 

15. Love (AS) - Ace of spades and dark clouds... hmm that is an odd background for love. I’d say it can also show the dark sides of love, like being obsessed or jealousy  

 

 

16. Money (AC) - Having others make an income for you, or enlisting someone to care for your investments.  

 

17. Marriage (10H) - What’s that book in her hand? The Bible? Or her mother’s handwritten instructions for sexual intercourse? 

 

 

18. Trap or Treachery (10D) - Religious undertones. Snakes that deceive doves?   

 

19. Prudence or Night (10S) - A caution. But upon a closer inspection, those enemies don’t seem to be real threats. So maybe it can be an overly cautious or anxious person? Fear in general. Being affected by the atmosphere and not thinking rationally. 

 

20. Merchant (10C) - Business negotiations. Good for the upcoming fiscal quarter. Also, a good time for an office romance.

 

 

21. Success (9H) - Victory is on your side!  

 22. A Journey (9D) - Trip, journey. Might also be a honeymoon?

 

23. Illness (9S) - Ah, yes. Bad outlook indeed.

 

24. A Gift or Surprise (9C) - Prepare yourself to be wooed. 

 25. A Fair Haired Girl (8H) - Silly girl who talks too much.  

 

26. News (8D) - New developments. I think it could also indicate world events and politics.  

 27. Trouble (8S) - Loneliness, depression, impotence  

28. A Dark Maiden (8C) - All dressed up and nowhere to go. An impatient social climber. 

29. With Child (7H) - Fertility, potential, abundance. Also, having to do it on your own. IVF. Surrogacy. Single mothers. 

30. Gossip (7D) - Literal gossip, libel, slander. Ha, love that one! Agree on the keywords.

31. Faithlessness (7S) - I feel that the English word doesn’t really reflect the imagery. The rose bush has flowers in multiple stages. It’s a stage of flux and change. Some areas are budding while others are reaching an end. 

 32. Love Letter (7C) - That is a lot of letters. Both from friends and lovers. Social media.

Who Was Minetta?

 

Minetta is a mystery.

Unlike Sepharial, who we know was Walter Gorn Old and who has a wikipedia page and various other biographical information online, I can't even find her real name.

This blog post from Mary Greer and the comments on it are interesting. There's been much speculation - was she Arthur Edward Waite? Cicely Kent? I don't believe she was either of those.

Did she have a hand in the creation of the Tarot Fortune Cards? Quite possibly.

I first became interested in Minetta because Andy Boroveshengra often referred to her and thought highly of her reading skills. But he never found any solid information on Minetta herself, either. It wasn't for lack of trying!

At this point, I'm convinced that it's easier to trace Frankie Albano! Since we have his legal name, we can find bits of information. We can't do that with someone we know only as "Minetta."

If you read playing cards, you probably use the full 52 card pack. Minetta's method uses a stripped 32 card bésigue pack, but it also utilizes reversed meanings. To avoid confusion, I made a "Minetta pack" - just a regular pack of Bees with the 2-6 removed, and her meanings written on the cards. When writing on cards, don't use regular ink or Sharpie - those smear. Get ultra fine tipped paint pens like these:

What Makes A Reader?

 

There's a thought provoking post on Hugh's blog that prompted me to elaborate a bit. https://thefortunetellerssociety.com/2023/08/21/how-do-i-read-lenormand/

What I'm seeing online is people who want to learn the cards making the same mistakes over and over. The big problem is a lack of discernment. You need to learn from people who can actually read cards. Just a few reliable sources. Less is more! I'm not trying to discredit the "competition" here. I do not sell courses, workshops, or any of that. I don't make videos. I just read cards, and I'm telling you what the problem is: bad signal.

You won't learn Lenormand from sub-par books. The ones Hugh mentions are more than adequate, especially Andy's. Get that one and work through it. Then work through it again. Stay with it until you've absorbed it.

You won't learn from youtube. With the exception of Hexe Claire, everything there is crap. Hexe Claire's videos are good, but they're an introduction. They'll get you started, that's all. If you want to progress, again, get Andy's book.

You won't learn on forums. Those are full of bad readings, it's all guesswork. Bad information is seldom corrected, since forums are focused on getting and keeping lots of board traffic, not trying to make sure people learn properly. (BTW, being a forum mod does not confer knowledge of the cards!)

Facebook groups are, if anything, worse.

And you won't learn by focusing on spreads, or learning to design your own spreads, or any of that. Good old fashioned lines, boxes, and tableaus work the best, and will answer any question. You don't need dedicated spreads for various subjects like love, money, etc. Stop wasting your time on spreads and practice reading the cards.

Just because a person has a youtube channel, moderates a forum, or even writes a book does not mean they know what they're talking about. As I commented on Hugh's blog, "I’d advise anyone who wants to learn to toss any books they have other than the ones mentioned. The vast majority of what’s out there is garbage. Approach the cards with logic.
Then, study and practice. Don’t try to learn silly spreads. Don’t seek instruction or advice on forums, facebook groups, etc. That’s the blind leading the blind. Just do readings every day, record them, and review them later to see if they were accurate. Keep doing that for at least five years and you’ll get there."

And yes, it does take at least five years to get fluent. You're learning a language. Don't underestimate the complexity of the method simply because there are only 36 cards!

Tradition

 

We all know how a lot of people will dig their heels in and refuse to learn cartomantic traditions, instead choosing to rely on "intuition." That would be fine, but for the fact that they push their views on the public, thus polluting the waters. Or they might make a deck, but choose to "innovate" rather than design the cards according to the reading tradition. There's a metric fucktonne of unreadable schlock out there.

I've been hanging out at cast iron discussion groups and found quite the opposite, in many cases. Let me explain first that a long time ago, people washed dishes with lye soap. Lye is used to this day to strip the seasoning from cast iron cookware. (Sometimes seasoning gets really crusty and needs to be stripped and done over.) The lye turns it to sludge and it washes right off. So you didn't want to wash your pans with soap then. People wiped their skillets with a rag, or scrubbed them with salt. But our modern dish detergent like Dawn is safe for washing pans. Still, some people still try to say you "should never use soap." I call bullshit. Wash your damn pan.

A lady at one of my cast iron groups said she knows this, she just doesn't use soap because her grandmother didn't, or told her not to. It's a way of keeping her grandma with her, I get that. Others will strip their pans by throwing them into a fire, risking cracks, warping, red scale and general heat damage. There are safe, inexpensive methods available but they choose to risk ruining their pan. They do it because a family member used to.

So people will follow a tradition for sentimental reasons, even if it's fatally flawed. But if there is no sentimental attachment, they want to tear it apart in spite of the value it has.

It makes no sense.

Fin de Siècle Kipper ->

 

I've been seeing commentary online for awhile now stating that directions in Ciro Marchetti's wonderful Fin de Siècle Kipper are "not easily discerned." Must people be spoon fed at every step? Has anyone tried looking at the cards? O ye generation of vipers, how long must I bear with thee? Sheesh. 😂

Directions in the Fin de Siècle are as easily seen as they are in the Originals.

1. Main Male: Yes, he's looking straight at you. But he stands facing left. Therefore, the card can be read as facing left.
2. Main Female: Right.
3. Marriage: No clear direction. (But the same can be said of this card in the Original, as the man and woman are facing each other.
4. Courtship: Again, no clear direction.
5. Mature Man: He faces left. Be aware, though, that he glances to the right, and his finger points to the card below him. All of this can be useful in a reading.
6. Mature Female: Inclines her head to the left.
7. Message: Both the drawer and the envelope open to the right.
8. False Person: Right.
9. Change: The car faces right.
10. Journey: The train moves to the left. The man in the foreground also faces left.
11. Sudden Wealth: The coins spill down to the card below.
12. Privileged Lady: Left. But again, watch her eyes.
13. Wealthy Man: He's inclined to the left.
14. Message of Concern: Right.
15. Lovers: Like 3 and 4, no direction.
16. Thoughts: Left.
17. Gift: Left.
18. Child: Right. Pay attention to the card above, as well.
19. Coffin: Opens to the right, the rose in the glass faces right, the near corner points right.
20. House: No direction.
21. Family Room: The portraits on the wall face right.
22. Official Person: Left.
23. Court House: Right.
24: Thief: Two out of the three people depicted on this card face left. Majority rules.
25. High Honor: Right.
26. Great Fortune: Left. But the card below stands to benefit most.
27. Unexpected Income: Queen Victoria faces left.
28. Expectation: Left.
29: Imprisonment: Right.
30. Judication: Right. Look at the Judge.
31. Bad Health: Right. Depending on context, you can also read this from the patient's POV, i.e., left.
32. Despair: Right.
33. Concern: Left.
34. Occupation: Right.
35. Pathway: The path curves and meanders, with no set left or right.
36. Distant Horizons: Both the gull and the ship are clearly moving to the right.
37. Poverty: No direction, though you could read the cat and rat as right if needed.
38. Toil & Labour: Right.
39: Community: Not really directional. The people face various directions. 

So you see the directions are no less clear than those in the Originals. This deck is perfectly fine for beginners, as well as more experienced readers. Just don't let facing directions shove you around the board, or fall into the trap of relying solely on english language sources. German websites are generally best for Kipper, and we do have Google Translate at our fingertips. Also highly recommended: Hildegard Leiding's Leiding Wahrsagekarten, Buch 1 & Buch 2.

The Sibilla and Combover Caligula

 

I wanted to know how much more "mourning" Trump will be allowed before they re-schedule his deposition (that was postponed on 7/15 "in consideration.") What's happened so far:

I used a Vera Sibilla - no reversals as I'm a bit rusty with it. (This is a practice read.) The spread is basically a French Cross, except I didn't add the cards to arrive at a synthesis for card 5, I just laid a card. (Sibilla, as you guys know, has no Majors and isn't numbered straight through like Lenormand.)

The Sibilla, as always, lived up to its reputation for chattiness and gave me more than I asked for, lol. The first thing I noticed is that there are three diamonds, indicating an element of risk. There's certainly risk involved on all sides. Diamonds are also concerned with money. (This is "just" the financial fraud and not the sedition - its all about money.)

Card 1 is the 10 of Spades, Militare. I think the New York Attorney General's office is strong, they mean business. The soldier is determined, tenacious, and has every intention of going over the mountains.

Card 2 is the Queen of Diamonds, Donna Maritata. Cards in this position can help or hinder the situation. This card is positive, as it indicates a caring woman who is also practical. It might be Leticia James herself, even if she is unmarried. A person can be equally committed to their career. I think she very much wants to see him finally get some consequences.

Card 3 is the 5 of Diamonds, Malinconia. It might refer to Ivana's death - he had no real regard for her. He had her buried at his golf course so he wouldn't have to pay taxes on it. Unlike the Widower card, the grave on this card belongs to an animal. Losing a pet can be devastating, but I don't think Trump is devastated. The card seems to be saying it's really not important to him, he doesn't see her as a person. Many even suspect that he had her "Epsteined." The AG's office might be letting a "proper" period of time pass, for appearances sake. (Who knows, they might be gathering even more evidence while this is going on.) He IS depressed - it hangs over his head - but I suspect that's due to things like this, the Jan. 6 hearings, and the RNC's threats to stop covering his legal bills once he announces his candidacy for president..

Card 4 contains the answer, and it's the Queen of Clubs, Giovine Fanciulla. It's not Ivanka, though she's also in hot water - she's 40, and this card stands for someone unmarried and under 30. The card doesn't always refer to a literal person. She points to Militare, indicating that the NY AG's office holds the solution. If QC is a person, she's an up-and-comer working at the AG's office who is key somehow. He steps on her, disrespects her. This may be someone he's insulted or offended in the past.

Card 5 is the synthesis and it's 10 of Diamonds, Il Ladro. Definitely Trump and his financial fraud. Look at the horizontal line: see how he stalks Ms. James, but the AG's office is on his tail with a bayonet, lol. The "synthesis" of all this is quite simple: Trump is a thief. We knew that, but there will finally be something done about it. We end on a red card, a positive outcome. It's just going to take longer than we would like. How long? Card 5 is summer, so that gives it up to 8 weeks to play out. If not, the answer card is a Club and indicates winter. Let's hope it's not that long! I think they'll be requiring his deposition by the end of summer, but after that things could drag on with a final decision this winter.

All in all, better than expected.

 

 

Unpopular Fact #3: Right- & Left-Brain Theory Is Utter Crap

 

 

 

 

For awhile, it was thought that the left side of the brain was analytical and the right side was creative and intuitive, and that one side or the other "dominates." But that's been completely debunked:

Then some people got the ill-conceived idea that if they just ignored left brained things, let all of that atrophy, they'd be amazingly psychic. But the thing is, even if right and left brain theory were true (which it isn't) we need to use our whole brain - even for reading cards. Analysis, logic and critical thinking skills are as necessary as intuition and creativity. Often even moreso.

 

It's not just aspiring card readers who do this. We've come to a point in time where the willfully ignorant think that facts and logic pose an actual threat. Rejection of science and embracing quack cures in the face of a pandemic, for instance, is hastening our descent into Dark Ages v2. So is racism - science itself tells us that race is a construct.  

I could go on, but you get the picture. The decision to close off from facts and stay stupid is, well, stupid.

Unpopular Fact #2: Decks Don't Call People

 We've all seen it: the aspiring reader asks "What deck should I get?" or "Can someone suggest a good beginner deck?" and without fail, people will pipe up and say "Get the deck that calls to you."

Never mind that pasteboard is obviously inanimate, so "the deck that calls to you" gets interpreted as "Do whatever you want", which is no advice at all. It's saying it doesn't matter. Get the one you think is pretty, or the one in the bargain bin, or whatever. But some decks are idiosyncratic. Others are just bad. Nobody can help this person if their deck is nonsensical. And the available reference material for wonky decks is often the LWB/companion book and nothing else.

I'm not saying that new readers should be treated like children. There's no reason not to start with the Thoth, or something similarly complex, if they're reasonably intelligent and that's what they want. But FFS, put some thought into this. Somebody asked for help, so help them. Or get out of the way. Don't just parrot things.

Really.

Unpopular Fact #1: This Is A Spread

 

A line of three cards with no named positions is a spread. So is a line of five, seven, or nine. Cards laid in squares, pyramids, and tableaus with no named positions are spreads. The cards are spread on the table (or on any available surface, like the boots above.)

A spread is simply an array. It's something spread out. When you invite people for a big dinner, the available food on the table is referred to as a spread. Nobody says the potatoes are the near future or the meat is advice. A ranch is referred to as a spread, because the land is spread out. The items on a newspaper or magazine page, taken together, are also referred to as a spread. The cover for a bed is called a spread as well, because you spread it on top.

I'm not sure how it started, but I've seen people referring to "reading cards without a spread" on multiple occasions in recent years. Stop. It's ignorant not to use a simple word like "spread" according to the definition.

On Kipperkarten...

 

There is an old thread at a ruined message board where someone asked about the difference between Lenormand and Kippers, and for some reason, my brain only decided to say something about the difference between scenic and non-scenic cards today. Brains are ornery and a little bit evil. Ask Hannah Hillam.

 So I thought I'd talk about that briefly today. The difference is not "Stop Cards." I never found any German readers who had heard of them prior to Toni's book. It's a useful book*, and direction is important, but we don't have to let that shove us all over the board.

Rather, the difference is this: those scenic Kippers have mnemonics all over them! Lenormand images might or might not have background imagery that gives extra clues, like trees on the Park, House, Sun and Roads, as a visual cue for the "many trees" rule from the PL Sheet. But the Rider is essentially about the Rider, the Clover about the Clover, etc. But the Kipper cards have a lot going on in each card, and you can use that. It's a little like RWS that way, but don't go off on a tangent and say things like "I feel like she's the whip the carriage driver is holding." Everything has its own intended meaning. Here's a simple one:

The title translates to "Good outcome in love." And we have paired doves - that meaning is obvious. But there's a dog, too - it can also be about friendship and loyalty. Ivy clings, but the fact that it's green and growing shows it's a good kind of clinging. The low wall encloses and protects, but it's not impassable. "Hold on loosely", as the old song says.

So it's not "The Birds", or "The Dog." It's about a successful relationship with someone. It might or might not have a sexual component, but it's deep.

Here's another:  

It's the Meeting card. The man looks amorous. The woman is still unsure, she hasn't decided one way or another. She's still thinking about it. Now look at the Cupid on the wall, the Cupids in this deck are important. Cupid holds his arrow aloft, but we don't see his bow. The arrow isn't even nocked, the point is up, and he certainly hasn't shot it. This could progress into romance, friendship, business, or enmity. It's simply a card of getting together. Que sera sera. 

Now, in case anyone tries to read a "Fool's journey" type numerical progression into the cards, we have No. 3: the Marriage card. We're only at 3, but this couple is already committed, and the woman is pregnant. It doesn't have to be literal, but it does indicate an established relationship, whether love, marriage, friendship, or business. There's a strong bond here: 

Trees and mountains form a protective barrier behind their backs. There's ivy again, and a house to show that they're settled. And there's that low wall again.

So you can see it's very different from Lenormand. But it's not RWS, either. Kipper is very much its own thing, and it makes a superb reading deck.
